Lot 2490
Faustus Cornelius Sulla, 56 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.23 g, 12 h), Rome. S•C Diademed, laureate and draped bust of Venus to right. Rev. PHILIPPVS Equestrian statue, raising right hand, set to right on aqueduct; below horse, a flower; within the arches of the aqueduct; AQVA MAR. Cf. Babelon (Cornelia) 63, Crawford 426/3, RBW 1528 and Sydenham 884 (for obverse) and Babelon (Marcia) 28, Crawford 425/1, RBW 1524 and Sydenham 919 (for reverse). An extremely rare hybrid issue. Somewhat brushed and the obverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, about very fine.

From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.

This interesting hybrid issue combines an obverse of F. Cornelius Sulla with a reverse of L. Marcius Philippus in error.
